Our Story

Our mission is to carry forward the tradition of the neighborhood market—offering quality food, thoughtful products, and friendly service in a place where people feel at home

A small corner store called Kelly's Market with signs including Knudsen Gold Star Milk. There is a vintage car parked at the curb, and a mailbox and some crates are outside the store.

Kelly’s Market is built on a simple idea: a neighborhood market should feel like part of the neighborhood.

My grandfather, Vince Kelly, understood that well. After immigrating to the United States in 1963, he opened the original Kelly’s Market in Culver City, California. His store became a gathering place for the community—serving local families as well as actors and crews working at nearby Desilu Studios. It was the kind of place where people stopped in not just to shop, but to catch up, share stories, and feel at home.

After more than 25 years working in the food industry, I decided to follow in my grandad’s footsteps—some 55 years later and 2,000 miles away—by opening Kelly’s Market here in Decatur.

As residents of the Old Depot District, we wanted to create that same neighborhood experience: the spirit of a classic corner grocery, with a modern and welcoming feel. A place where you can pick up groceries, meet friends, grab a great sandwich, or discover something new.

Today, I’m proud to run the market alongside my son, Tanner. Having family involved in the business brings the story full circle and keeps us focused on what matters most—taking care of our customers and being a part of this community.

We hope you’ll stop in and see everything we have to offer, from everyday essentials to specialty foods. Try one of our sandwiches, pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers, or relax with a craft beer or a glass of wine. There’s plenty of free parking behind the store, and dogs are always welcome.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
